Reliable quantitative measurements of harmful particulates in industrial hygiene environments is paramount to worker safety, and different cyclones are meant to provide a convenient means to sample at various particle size cut points depending on regulatory requirements. A recent study from Dr. Lee, et al at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) showed that Mesa’s GK4.126 (also known as the “RASCAL”) can be calibrated at both respirable (4 µm) and thoracic-size (10 µm) selective sampling.
The NIOSH study used the RASCAL to sample particles of a fixed size and chemical composition which were captured on a PVC filter. After sampling, the PVC filter was placed in a solution to extract the particles where they were then quantified using a luminescence spectrometer and scanning electron microscope. The study concluded that the RASCAL can be used to sample thoracic-sized particles at a flow rate of 2.7 – 3.5 LPM, in addition to the traditional respirable dust sampling at 8.5 – 9.5 LPM.
This is monumental for workers in industrial hygiene, since it means that they can use the RASCAL for high volume sampling in multiple environments!
